Spring Colours: Getting Lost at the Tulip Festival

May 10, 2017

Tulips. Spring. Festival food. And all set in the mountains? Sign me up!
My day trip to the Abbotsford Tulip Festival had everything my flower dreams could think of and then some. So if you love the thought of summer arriving, get ecstatic by vibrant colours and enjoy side stepping around puddles of mud- this festival pretty much has your name written all over it.

But I won't lie - getting here was a mission.

I will admit, sometimes I have been known to get a little too dramatic. But it's only because I get excited at discovering new things, and... let's be honest; the people who know me well, know that this is something I just do. So while I may have gotten my overly-excited-about-anything personality into a tizzy about this Tulip Festival, this wasn't the case for my fellow festival-goer friends aka. the poor souls I dragged with me.

All it took was one photo from last years festival, and I already set a mental alarm to attend this years extravaganza. However, I will say... when I screamed at my friend (okay, I didn't scream but I sent a long message in CAPS with a link) I was surprised she wasn't already planning out her photos like I had been doing for the past 12 months. Perhaps my pent up excitement from the last year was getting the better of me, but after I had now brought it up three times, and with no direct action for or against it, I decided to take initiative and buy us all tickets. I even had an evil chuckled to myself as I hit 'Confirm Tickets', knowing full well they couldn't back out now because who turns down a free outing!

The big day finally arrived, and yes, I did sleep fine the night before but thank you for asking. I booked for a Monday thinking I was going to beat the crowds, especially considering the forecast called for rain. Boy was I wrong. The parking lot was packed fuller than my regularly consumed cans of tuna, and wouldn't you know it - the mountainous weather even made a grand switch and brought out full sunshine #winning.

As I walked up to the gates, all I could see was a tidal wave of people next to the biggest sea of every colour known to man. I was in heaven (for the flowers, not for the sea of people - to say I hate crowds is putting it politely). It was beautiful. I don't know what I loved more, seeing the rows beyond rows of blooming flowers, or hearing the sheer excitement from my less than thrilled friends - which were now thanking me for bringing them. I just shrugged it off like it was no big deal, but inside I was applauding.

Between the sun, the colours and the mountains - the sights were absolutely stunning. And that sentence had to be the closest I have ever come to sounding like a real, live Martha Stewart. But in all honesty, it was the fresh taste of Spring I needed to jump start my love for Summer.

Naturally I don't go anywhere without my dog, so he even came for the joyous event- gotta love dog friendly outings. A word to the wise: don't wear your Jimmy Cho's. I stupidly left my Hunter Boots at home and cursed at myself for the entire half an hour I spent scrapping mud off my ankle leather boots.

Travel Tips to Live By

#1

For the love of God, check your pockets and remove your shoes. I can't go into detail enough from how many hours of my life I have lost to others while waiting to go through a security check point at an airport!

If you're on a road trip and you're in a remote place I only have four words for you: watch your gas level. That is all.

Trail Mix literally keeps me going, no matter what I am doing. I'm talking about the one with the Smarties, not the other bird seed crap. Best return for your investment, I promise. Oh, and beef jerky.
